A Need to Be Free

by Francis MacNutt (from the Jan/Feb 2008 issue)

Many people in our country, including ministers, have been involved in Freemasonry. Many who come to CHM for prayer have either been involved directly, and even more have Masonic influences in their ancestry. Scholarly books have been written on the history of the Masonic rites, so this is a brief account of why people need to be cut free from the harmful effects of Masonry.

First, it should be said that many enter a Lodge for reasons of business and to join an association of friends upon whom they can rely. Many of the Presidents of the United States, including George Washington, were Masons and the back of our dollar bill is filled with Masonic symbols (such as the all-seeing eye of the Grand Architect of the Universe). My great-uncle, Francis A. MacNutt, who was in the U.S. diplomatic service, was told by the Secretary of State that he would not advance in the service unless he became a Mason. He refused and left the diplomatic service.

Moreover, the early history of the Masons set them in opposition to organized churches, Catholicism in particular, and the Masons were responsible for various religious persecutions (in the 18th Century, for example, the Jesuits were suppressed in several countries). The opposition was so strong that Catholics were forbidden to join the Masons.

The second reason that Christians have traditionally been against Masonry is that the Church has been against societies that take oaths of secrecy, with dire threats of evil (death) that are incurred for violating the "curse." If you have read any of the initiation rites of the various levels all the way up to the 33rd Degree, you realize that they appeal to fear at a very deep level (at one level, a noose is placed around your neck).

The most important factor, though, is that false gods, replacing Jesus Christ, are invoked. For example, the Egyptian gods, Horus, Set, and Isis are invoked at the 31st Degree. With each degree, the confusion and idolatry increase, until Lucifer himself becomes part of the initiation. The sin involved in Masonry is ultimately idolatry and involves the rejection of Jesus Christ as our only Savior.

For this reason, if we have ourselves been part of the Masonic religion, we need to repent and to renounce our involvement at each of the levels in which we have taken part. Prayer for deliverance from the effects of Masonry may also be needed. If these prayers seem slow in taking effect, we encourage you to read about the various levels of initiation and their effects so you can pray in greater depth for the effects of Masonry on your life. Some people are freed by a relatively simple prayer, but others need more depth. Prayers will be needed, too, to release you from generational curses which you, your family, or your ancestors may have incurred.

In addition to men’s organizations associated with the Masons, such as the Shriners, women also take part through groups such as the Eastern Star and the Rainbow Girls; and for boys, there is the Order of De Molay. Entire areas of our country where Masonry has been dominant (such as Richmond, Virginia) seem to be resistant to fervent Christianity.

In general, because Masons do so much good work (Shriners’ hospitals and circuses), most Christians find it hard to believe that there are any real dangers connected with being a Mason, especially since many seem to join for mainly social or business reasons.

If you want to become more fully informed about the Masons, we encourage you to read books such as Christianity and American Freemasonry by William Whalen, and Masonry Unmasked by John Salza.
